System Design

Understanding the value of a solar system means understanding the value of energy.

  • A solar system is a long term investment because it will generate a great deal of energy over a long period of time.
  • The amount of energy generated won't always stay the same and it is unlikely that the value of that energy will stay the same either.
  • As the years roll on your solar system's total production potential will degrade little by little but the value of that energy is more than likely to continue to increase.

Monthly Production and Consumption

Solar systems in Nova Scotia produce much more energy in the summer than they do in the winter.

  1. If you generate more electricity than you can use in a billing period, surplus kilowatt-hours (kWh) will be “banked” and applied to your next bill to offset any electricity drawn from the grid until the end of the year.
  2. If you end the year with excess generation remaining, NS Power would apply this to any billed consumption within the same calendar year up to a maximum of your total billed energy.

This means you can achieve a "Net-Zero" home in Nova Scotia by generating as much energy as you use in a calendar year, regardless of when it is generated or when it is used.

Two things happen when energy rates increase for homeowners with a PV system:

  • Payback period shortens,
  • Return on investment increases.

Residential energy rates have increased in Nova Scotia by an average of 3.3% for the last 10 years and Nova Scotia Power will certainly continue this trend.

Solar panels may be the stars of the show, but these 35 inverters are the real brains behind the operation 🧠🔌

Microinverters handle tasks like:

  • monitoring,
  • performance verification,
  • system maintenance and ensuring the longevity of your solar system.

So, while your panels are soaking up the rays, your microinverters are working hard to keep your solar system at peak performance.

At The Sun Box we choose enphase because they are without a doubt the more innovative of all the inverter technologies.

  • Class II double-insulated enclosure
  • More than one million cumulative hours of testing
  • Optimized for the latest high-powered PV modules
  • Remote automatic updates for the latest grid requirements

35 inverters gives you a total of 10.5 kW AC

35 cutting edge IQ8PLUS Inverters

AC Capacity: 300W

Model: IQ8PLUS

The brain of the semiconductor-based microinverter is our proprietary application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) which enables the microinverter to operate in grid-tied or off-grid modes. This chip is built in advanced 55 nm technology with high-speed digital logic and has super-fast response times to changing loads and grid events, alleviating constraints on battery sizing for home energy systems. Part of the Enphase Energy System, IQ8A Microinverters integrate with the Enphase IQ Battery, Enphase IQ Gateway, and the Enphase App monitoring and analysis software. IQ8A Microinverters redefine reliability standards with more than one million cumulative hours of power-on testing, enabling an industry-leading limited warranty of up to 25 years.

Equipment

The Enphase IQ System Controller 3 connects the home to grid power, IQ Batteries, and solar PV.

The IQ Controller 2 provides "Sunlight Backup", meaning your system will continue to produce power during a grid outage. This is different from a traditional grid-tied system, which will shut down during a grid outage. The IQ Controller 3 is compatible with the IQ8-Series Microinverters as well as previous generation of microinverters including IQ7-Series, M215, M250 and S series, making it simple for home owners to upgrade their systems.

  • Ten-year limited warranty
  • Controls safe connectivity to the grid
  • Automatically detects grid outages
  • Provides seamless transition to backup
  • Connects to the load or service equipment side of the main load panel
  • Supports whole home and partial home backup
  • Seamless integration with compatible AC home stand by generators
  • When paired with a dedicated IQ Load Controller, homeowners have the ability to prioritize and direct power to critical loads in the event of a grid outage.

IQ Combiner 5/5C

The IQ Combiner 5 consolidates interconnection equipment into a single enclosure, and streamlines IQ Series Microinverters and IQ Gateway installation by providing a consistent, pre-wired solution for residential applications. It uses Control Cable wiring for communication and is compatible with IQ System Controller 3/3G and IQ Battery 5P.

IQ System Controller 3G

Q System Controller 3G provides microgrid interconnection device (MID) functionality by automatically detecting and seamlessly transitioning the home energy system from grid power to backup power in the event of a grid failure. It consolidates interconnection equipment into a single enclosure and streamlines grid-independent capabilities of PV, storage, and generator installations by providing a consistent, pre-wired solution for residential applications.

IQ5P

An all-in-one, AC-coupled storage system, the IQ Battery 5P is the most powerful Enphase battery yet. It has a total usable energy capacity of 5.0 kWh, and features six embedded grid-forming microinverters and 3.84 kW of continuous power, as well as peak output power of 7.68 kW for 3 seconds and 6.14 kW for 10 seconds. Easily integrating with the Enphase Energy System, the IQ Battery 5P can provide backup capability when installed with IQ System Controller 3/3G, and is supported by a 15-year limited warranty.

Will a grid-tied solar system power my home during a power outage?

Tom Rendle

Posted 7 months ago

1 minute read

A Solar PV system is capable of producing more power than your property uses in a day, this excess goes back to the grid. During a power outage you cannot export power to the grid as it could injure line-workers so all grid-tied Solar PV systems are designed and required to shut down automatically as soon as they stop detecting the grid. This is called "anti-islanding". Additional components can be installed that allow a part or all of a grid-tied solar PV system to operate during an outage but this typically requires a significant investment and is not trivial.

*All calculations are an average based on the power your panels are expected to generate, and your usage average last year, not the exact new bill. Your new bill will still depend on how much energy you use in the future. Incentives are subject to change. The actual amount can be higher or lower than what is quoted, and may not stay at a fixed rate over time.
